KOMPASS ietvaros tiek organizētas sarunas, diskusijas un prezentācijas, kas reflektē uz dažādām mūsdienu mākslas un kultūras aktualitātēm / serie of artist talks, presentations and discussions

Nākamā KOMPASA saruna
Piektdien, 5. decembrī, plkst. 18:00

Ieeja bez maksas.

Projektu atbalsta Valsts Kultūrkapitāla fonds.

KOMPASS
20:00
Moderators: Kaspars Lielgalvis
Dalībnieki: Hanna Herr (US), Zane Onckule (LV), Jonas Buchel (DE/LV), John W. Fail (US/EE), Ernest Truely (US/EE)

KOMPASS
20:00
Moderator: Kaspars Lielgalvis (Totaldobže Art Centre)
Participants: Hanna Herr (US), Zane Onckule (LV), Jonas Buchel (DE/LV), John W. Fail (US/EE), Ernest Truely (US/EE)

For this addition of KOMPAS we invite organizers who are active in creating different kinds of cultural projects and initiatives outside of their place of origins to share their experiences. We look to open a dialog in which to farther understand their particular reasons for looking outside of their home countries, communities and comfort zones in order to create their work. What have they learned and gained? How have these kind of activities impacted the environments in which they were realized, and how has working outside of one's comfort zones transformed the connection with one's original environment?

Zane Onckule represents Contemporary Art Centre KIM? in Riga, which recently started a collaborative action in New York City. While Hannah Herr is still a young artist, she already has experience in organizing an initiative in Thailand. Two other Americans John W. Fail and Ernest Truely have been organizing cultural events for several years in Helsinki and Tallinn through the art centers PTARMIGAN and POLYMER. German Jonas Buchel is active in city development initiatives in Riga and is the Co-Founder of Riga's URBAN INSTITUTE.

With this talk/discussion we want to highlight circumstances in which it seems necessary to reach outside of one's place of origin in order to realize their ideas. There are always possibilities to look beyond the borders of one's comfort zone- borders which are often just close enough to prevent gaining a wider perspective. Often outside of this zone possibilities appear by themselves and offer new perspective on the idea itself, affording the opportunity to evaluate ideas more critically and more thoughtfully, and to possibly discover new ideas entirely.

Do you lose your identity while widening your activities beyond the borders of one's communities in terms of language, geography, culture etc.? So what is the value of identity and where are its borders? What exactly is identity? Is identity only a way of belonging to groups of similarly speaking/thinking people or those who have similar attitude towards life or maybe exactly the opposite attitude from yours? And who actually benefits from defining identity?

TACE

Audio-visual performance

TACE is a compilation of international collaborations orchestrated by Kimberley Bianca, an audio-visual performance artist and VJ (Disaster Girl). TACE could be perceived as the polar opposite of her Disaster Girl concept. TACE means, “to be silent”. The sentiment is of Taoist philosophical aspects; the union of nature and wisdom, and wu-wei (letting things take their natural course).

Kimberley discovers opportunities that transcend boundaries of culture, language and definable domains to enhance creativity in cross-cultural communication. She has directed community events and AV workshops, released collaborative albums Digital Disaster and TACE, produced music video’s and undertaken international artist residencies in Europe and United States.
